Performance characteristics of epoxy resin

Generally speaking, epoxy resin structures contain hydroxyl and ether bonds, which give them high adhesion. Due to these polar groups, electromagnetic forces can be generated at adjacent interfaces. During the curing process, there is less chemical interaction with the curing agent, which can further generate hydroxyl and ether bonds. This not only has high cohesion, but also generates strong adhesion. Therefore, epoxy adhesive is suitable for various materials such as metal, plastic, glass, wood, etc., and materials such as fibers have strong bonding strength, commonly known as "universal adhesive".
The epoxy resin molecules are tightly arranged and do not precipitate low molecular weight substances during the curing process. And it can also be formulated as a solvent free adhesive, so its shrinkage rate is generally relatively low. If suitable fillers are selected, the shrinkage rate can be reduced to 0.1-0.2%.
There are stable benzene rings and ether chains in the epoxy resin structure, and the cured structure is dense, which determines that the epoxy adhesive has strong resistance to the effects of atmosphere, water, chemical media, bacteria, etc. Therefore, it can be used in many harsh environments.
Epoxy resin contains various polar groups and highly reactive epoxy groups, therefore it has strong bonding strength with various polar materials such as metals, glass, cement, wood, plastics, and especially materials with high surface activity. At the same time, the bonding strength of epoxy cured products is also very high, so their bonding strength is very high.
Universal epoxy resins, curing agents, and additives come from a wide range of sources, have high production capacity, and are easy to prepare. They can be used for contact molding and can be applied on a large scale. The main drawbacks of epoxy adhesive are: when not toughened, the cured material is generally brittle, with poor resistance to peeling, cracking, and impact; Low adhesion to low polarity materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Surface activation treatment must be carried out first; Some raw materials, such as active diluents and curing agents, have varying degrees of toxicity and irritation. When designing formulas, it should be avoided as much as possible, and ventilation protection should be strengthened during construction.
From the above, it can be seen that epoxy resin has excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, especially high adhesion, low shrinkage rate, good stability, and excellent electrical insulation performance. It provides a material foundation for products such as adhesives, composite matrix materials, and powder coatings.
